The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) has been selected by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to host a 5G deployment lab. The lab will be set up by the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE) at IIT Mandi. The 5G Applied Laboratory facilitates the development and testing of 5G applications in various social and economic contexts.

The DoT officially awarded the 5G in-use lab to the School of Computer and Electrical Engineering (SCEE), IIT Mandi at the India Mobile Congress (IMC 2023) at Pragati Square, New Delhi. The objectives of the 5G Applied Laboratory are to build competencies and participation in 5G technologies among students and scientific communities. It also aims to enable UG and PG level projects for students using 5G environment.

The IIT Mandi 5G Use-case Lab will explore the applications of 5G technologies in areas including e-healthcare, smart cities and next-generation communications.

In addition, the facility will also encourage academic-industry partnerships for ideation and development of 5G use cases and provide local access to 5G pilot deployments to startups and SMEs around the institution – Indian University and Startup Ecosystem Prepares 6G.

100 5G labs will be set up in universities across India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated IMC 2023. On Friday, it announced the creation of 100 5G labs across India, which will serve as testing and breeding grounds for local innovators, students and startups to develop a new range of applications across sectors.

Speaking at the event, Modi emphasized the importance of India becoming a thought leader in technology, citing past successes such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the Covid-19 vaccination platform, CoWIN. He stated: “This is the time when we, along with the great adopters and implementers of technology, must become thought leaders in all sectors. India has the strength of a young population and a dynamic democracy. “I want to invite all the participants, especially the youth, to come and I will be with you.”
