Listen to the latest new Beatles song Now and Then

Today is the first new Beatles song since 1995. Now and Then is available on streaming services (with an Atmos mix supported on it) and the story behind the production of the songs caught the attention of many fans. Iconic rock band Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr turned to progressive technology and machine learning to remix a cut from an old John Lennon recording.

The Beatles first attempted to make something of Lennons Now and Then demo in the mid-90s, when McCartney, George Harrison and Starr reunited to work on new songs that would appear in the bands. selected Their albums Free as a Bird and Real Love ended in success, putting full band arrangements on top of Lennons demos.

But development on Now and Then eventually stalled due to technical problems that made it difficult to work on the original tape. On John’s demo tape, the piano was a bit hard to hear. And in those days, of course, we didn’t have the technology to break up, McCartney said in a new mini-documentary about the song. Every time we wanted a little more of Johns’ voice, this piano came in and darkened the picture.

Finally, the trio session featuring McCartney, Harrison and Starr ended without ending now and then. I think we are running out of time. And it was like, I don’t know, maybe you should just drop this one,” McCartney said. “The song was kind of in the closet,” McCartney said. Harrison died in 2001, which casts more doubt on the song. McCartney said: “It took almost a quarter of a century for us to wait for the right moment to confront the ‘now and then’ again.”

The big moment was earlier this decade, when director Peter Jackson was working on his masterpiece turn back Documentary for Disney Plus His team developed a technology that allowed them to take almost any piece of music (even ancient demos) and split all the different components into individual tracks based on machine learning. McCartney and Starr realized this was their chance to bounce back and give the ending they deserved. “Now we can put it together and make a proper record out of it,” McCartney said. He recorded a bass track, Starr added drums, and producer Giles Martin provided the string arrangement that Giles’ father used to do.

The tracks documentary doesn’t provide much detail about what you’ll hear on the completed track from Harrison’s previous recordings. It is said that he was not a fan of Lennon’s unfinished song from the beginning. But McCartney says they kept his parts out of it selected sessions, and McCartney himself played a Harrison-style slide guitar solo.

Despite some consternation from fans, everyone involved in the project (and from the estates of non-living members) seems completely comfortable with how Now and After came together.

My dad loved it because he was never shy about experimenting with recording technology. Sean Ono Lennon said I think it’s really beautiful. McCartney echoed this sentiment. To still be working on Beatles music in 2023…wow. In fact, they were dealing with advanced technology, something The Beatles were very fond of. Now and then, it probably sounds like the last Beatles song. And we’ve all played on it, so it’s a real Beatle recording.

Even if this is the Beatles’ last foray, it’s exciting when you think of the countless recordings that predate the Fab Four that this track separation technology could help restore and breathe new life into in the years to come.
