Only have a Meta Quest headset? These are our favorite games

Before you can actually play, there are a few things you need to do. Here are a few tips for setting things up, as the Quest interface isn’t always the easiest to navigate.

Set your boundary. The last thing you want while playing is to bump into an object in your room while you’re basically blindfolded. Quest guides you through the boundary setting process. Roomscale allows you to draw a game space for free movement, fixed when you are stationary. But what if you move places? Or do you want to play sitting instead of standing?

To change your border, press the Oculus button on your right controller (it’s just below the joystick). This will display the bottom menu (you only need to do this if the menu is not already displayed). From there, if you hover over the watch, you can select the Quick Settings panel. Then select Guardian. If you choose Stationary, you just need to hit OK and you’re all set. If you choose Roomscale, Guardian will guide you in drawing a new border.

Buy the games. To purchase games for Quest, you really only have one option: the Meta Quest Store. But there are three ways to do it. Regardless of which option you choose, you must have a payment method on file (credit card, debit card, or PayPal). The browser method is the easiest way to enter these details.

  1. Browser: Enter the store. From there, you can type the name of the game into the search bar at the top right or click Apps & Games to browse. Once you’ve selected a game, there’s a blue button to the right of its info page that lists its price. Tap it and it will ask you to buy.
  2. App: Download the Oculus app and sign in to your account. Click the Shop button at the bottom left and you can browse or search for a specific title, just like in the browser. When you click on a game, the app uses the same button as the price system at the bottom of the screen. Just click the button, check the payment details and hit buy.
  3. Headset: With the headset on, bring up the bottom menu again. The store icon is an orange icon with a small shopping bag. Click this, and you can browse through games or search. Once you’ve selected a game and looked at its info page, press the blue button on the right with the price indicator to buy.

Note: If the game is free, the blue button will say Get instead of listing the price. And if you buy the game through the browser or the app, you still need to download it to your headset. See the next step for instructions.

Download and access your games. After purchasing a game, you must download it. If you purchased it through the store on your headset, the download should start automatically. Once done, the button will change to Play so you can jump right in.

If you bought the game through the browser or app, go to the store with your headset and search for the game. The store lists it as purchased, but when you click on its info page, the blue button changes from price list to download. Tap it and it will automatically show you the download progress bar.

To access all your purchased and downloaded games, pull up the bottom menu bar by pressing the Oculus button on that right controller. From there, click the Apps button on the right (the one with nine dots). It will show you all your purchases and you can filter the ones that are installed or those that are not. Click on the game icon and it should load directly.

Re-center your page. Sometimes, you find that your screen is no longer centered as you would like. Maybe you took off your headset to check your phone or drink some water, or maybe you’re in a game and want to change your direction. To do this, press the Oculus button on the right controller, then click on the left side that shows the time to enter the quick settings menu. “Under Wi-Fi there is a button that says Reset View.” Click it and it will ask you to move your head to where you want the screen to be, then hit OK.

Check your battery life. Once fully charged, the Quest’s battery typically lasts about two hours. If you’re not sure how much juice your headset has left, press the Oculus button on the right controller to bring up the bottom menu. On the left, below the clock, there’s a small battery icon that gives you a rare gauge of your charge. If you click on it, the quick settings page will appear. On the top left is the exact percentage as well as the percentage of each of your controllers.
